Like all those who complete a period of study in an institution I have spent 2007 sorting out an independent direction for my work free of deadlines and the expectations of others. It was not easy as I had not only lost the research programme but also the sometimes fierce but vital rudder provided by a dear and late friend.
I had found a language and realised that my painting must include drawing and be produced with vigour and trust. I have since scratched around and a continuum is visible I hope.
The 2007 work explores the midlands, north and north west of this state as before but with a more focussed inclusion of the objects that interrupt the view, objects I love. They are sheep, bales of hay, buildings, irrigators and a plethora of posts, signs and fencing. I first met irrigators as a child in New South Wales travelling with my father and they remain entrancing.
I also fell under the spell of an extraordinary shed built by George Eustace at Josef Chromy’s Relbia vineyard. It is constructed using what George calls inverted crows feet and they are a blast of galvanised steel within glorious yellow and white fields of vine.
The many interruptions become rhythm, disturbance and delight.  Far from being an irritation they are distributed across a desolate landscape and I love it all.
It is inevitable that the figure must appear and while continuing to work with what I have begun to understand I must now learn how to place the figure.
I dedicate this year’s show to my husband David.
